Response to Covid 19 Pandemic:
Covid 19 pandemic continued to affect the teaching-learning-assessment processes of educational institutions in this academic year also. Nevertheless, at Yenepoya Medical College (YMC), the undergraduate, interns and postgraduate students could successfully continue their academics with technology-assisted strategies in hybrid mode. Digital modalities of teaching with the support from all the trained faculty members, we could keep the momentum of the learning process among the students in the best possible way.
Multiple online resources catering to the needs of the students were adapted innovatively to enhance the learning experience of students in an interactive way. Keeping in mind the skill acquisition of students, the cornerstone of medical education, clinical exposure in hospitals was provided in small batches and advanced simulation centres-ACTSYEN, ASSEND and human cadaveric lab were utilized with all standard guidelines. Parents-Teachers-Students’ meetings assisted us to understand the challenges and difficulties faced and we could address them appropriately.
We have organized various faculty development programs; conferences, workshops, continuous medical education programs, guest lectures and outreach activities. Faculty have efficiently utilized the time during the lockdown period and published their research activities, procured research grants from funding agencies, presented papers in conferences and completed MOOCs.
Our Medical College hospital has taken lead in the implementation of all guidelines, initiatives of the Central, State Governments and district administration in the containment of the Covid 19 pandemic. All health care providers including MBBS students, interns and postgraduates were trained for screening, testing, prophylaxis, treatment, use of PPEs and infection control. We are the first in the Dakshina Kannada district to get ICMR approved RT-PCR testing facility and have done the highest number of tests so far. Covid care and support services like quarantine, Covid care facility, treatment of mild, moderate and severe cases (ICU care, HFO and Oxygenated beds), fever clinic, triage, RT-PCR testing facility were provided from the beginning of the pandemic. Home-based care was given to the families residing in the rural areas w.r.t. Covid 19. YMC also provided vaccination against Covid 19 for all the staff and students of constituent units under Yenepoya (Deemed to be University).
We could able to continue our teaching, learning, assessment, service, patient care and research activities despite the Covid 19 pandemic due to support given by the University, active participation of faculty members and staff and cooperation of students, parents and patient community.
